The Arc House by Maziar Behrooz

The Arc House designed by studio Maziar Behrooz Architecture, completed in 2010. This contemporary architecture house has two levels and a total surface of 6,400 sq. feet. It is located in East Hampton, New York under a flight path of a local airport and close to a train track.

The architects considered this fact that house located near the airport and accentuated it in house’s exterior by making it look like an airplane hangar. Such structure does not only look extraordinary, but is also very cost-effective because it doesn’’t require too many supporting walls or columns inside of the building. The arc contains just some of the facilities, such as living, dining rooms and the kitchen, whereas the rest of the house is very well integrated to the landscape, housing some of the more intimate areas. The house has an arching corrugated metal roof and a built flat-roofed section in the rear made of structural panels. The energy usage of the house is significantly less than a typical house of this size; due to both the arc shape and materials used. Also it allows for natural cooling.

Cool concrete and warm wood balance out the remaining materials, while windows that span either side of the building provide ample daylight. A large manicured lawn surrounds Arc House, while a tall canopy of pine trees borders the nearly three acres of land it sits on.

The lower level houses an office, a sitting room, a garage and work out areas; part of the lower level opens to a courtyard that allows cool air circulation and a distinctly private outdoor space.
